GSHP with Boreholes for Upgraded Victorian Home
How do you tackle expensive heating costs when living in an old property which you want to bring into the 21st century whilst considering environmental factors.
The Project
A poorly insulated Victorian home with increasing heating bills and an inefficient system that the client was looking to replace and future proof.
Client Requirements
Dave Blackmore of Terratherm explained the project, “This Victorian property was tired and needed some TLC. We worked to insulate external stone walls, added new insulation in the attic, and installed solar PV and solar thermal panels alongside the GSHP.
“We wanted one central system that multiple services could feed into and the 400l thermal store was perfect for this application. We wanted efficiency to be at the forefront of the installation and, after a ground survey calculated that 3 boreholes 130m deep would give us the best outcomes. We opted for a manifold and all plant to be situated and installed in the existing utility room.
“Initially we were apprehensive about the amount of disruption the drilling of the 3 boreholes would bring to the client’s driveway and access to the property, but with good communication and a can-do, dynamic approach, we completed the task on schedule to the client’s satisfaction.
The ground maintains a delta of 3 deg c glycol to the boreholes with a mini – mum flow witnessed of 5.5 deg c and return 8.5 deg c at maximum load conditions.”
Product Selection
WPE-I 12 230 Premium ground source heat pump
- Upgrading Victorian property including internal insulation of existing stone walls and new roof.
- 4 bed 200 m² property, 37kw oil boiler replaced with with 12kw GSHP, utilising third party solar PV & thermal into 400l heat store tank for hot water.
- 3 boreholes drilled to 130 m deep with a manifold and all plant installed in the existing utility room.
The boreholes operate on a flow temperature of 5.5 degrees and a return of 8.5 degrees C, making for a very efficient system.
Solution
STIEBEL ELTRON provided support and advice to Terratherm throughout the project. Local specification manager Richard Hopkins said, “After meticulous design planning with Terratherm to meet the high expectations of the client, we proposed a design which would fit neatly in the existing plantroom, whilst giving the client the level of control and efficiency that they wanted to achieve. This installation has to be one of the most efficient in the country. The system maintains the property at a comfortable 20 degrees with just a 30 degree flow.”
Making heat pumps easier than ever
- Internet service gateway ISG web installed
- The client can access all settings/controls and zones via an app or remotely via the internet with EASYTRON and can even graph chosen parameters over 24hr/7days/1month/1 year time periods. Project location / reference location
- Repeaters installed so that all wireless and Bluetooth controls, wall and radiator thermostats work throughout the property
